Choosing a Home Security Company
Are you in the market for purchasing a home security system? If so, do you plan
on having your system continually monitored? Before running out and selecting
any security company, be careful to select one that is dependable and fair. It’s
important to pay attention to leases because certain companies will make you
sign a contract, but if you are not happy with the service than you are stuck
with that company for however long the contract states. Make sure you do your
research and ask important questions to ensure that you are doing business with
a company you trust.
Below are some important questions to ask any perspective security company
before you sign anything:
How long have they been in business? This is an important question to ask
because you want to avoid signing a contract with a company that may fold up and
disappear on you. Your best bet is to go with a company that has been in
business for five or more years.
Does the company have all the appropriate licenses? Check to see what licenses
your state requires from security companies. For instance, some states require
special alarm-contractor licenses and they may also require security companies
to have a low-voltage electrical license. Does your prospective company have any
of these? Legit security companies will not have a problem showing you their
licenses.
Is the company bonded and insured? Unless you plan on paying for the damages
made during installation, you better find out if the company is bonded and
insured. It should be their responsibility to make repairs if any damage occurs
on your property when they are installing your home security system.
Do they do background checks when hiring employees? It helps to have a good idea
of who is working within the company. If background checks have been made to
their current employees then the chances of the people installing your equipment
being reliable are higher.
Does the home security company own their own monitoring service? Find out if the
company owns their own monitoring service and if they do then find out the
location of where this service takes place. Is it local? At this time you should
also ask if the home security monitoring service is listed with the Underwriters
Laboratories.
Are you required to lease the home security system? Ask them if you would be
required to lease their home security system? They may sell them outright. It is
important for you to ask so that you know what you're committing to.
How long is the warranty good for and what does it cover? In case problems arise
it is important to know how long you are covered under warranty and what
specific problems are covered.
How much will everything cost you? It is important to not only find out what the
sales and installation will cost, but also how much the monthly monitoring
service costs. Be sure to ask whether it will be a set price or if it will vary
overtime.
If you have any other general questions or concerns, do not hesitate to ask your
salesman. They should know the products extremely well and be able to offer you
recommendations. But keep in mind that they will be pushing you toward their
product because they are most likely working on commission.
It often helps to ask friends and neighbors for recommendations of home security
companies in your area. They will be able to tell you what has worked well for
them. You should also try asking your insurance agent. If you still don't know
where to start looking, check with the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association
for a list of companies in your area.
